Previous Memorial Plans

The park will be composed of circular gardens of varying dimensions. Within each circular area, slabs of granite will be also be arranged in a circular pattern, each slab engraved with the names of the American soldiers. Links between the circles will be slightly sunken and planted with shrubbery in order to recreate the roads of Normandy (Hedgerows) and the difficulties soldiers endured advancing through such vegetation. Subdued and natural looking outdoor furnishings will be used whenever possible to enhance the pathways of memory linking the different gardens.

Each of the circular gardens will provide an atmosphere both powerful and unique, partly through the accompanying floral arrangements (shrubs and perennials) native to the Normandy coastline. In order to represent the various areas of the United States, from which the soldiers came from, each garden will be given a unique "mood." Individual character of each garden will be achieved through the planting of clusters of trees of a single variety, each one specific to a garden. The choice of species will add interest value to the site - flowers, autumn colors, decorative banks - to stimulate interest of visitors throughout the year.
